SUCCOTASH SOUTHERN & CREOLE KITCHEN

If you’re anywhere within an hour’s drive of Durham, you may already be familiar with Succotash, the Food Truck. For four years Chef Juan DiGiulio drove that truck all over the Triangle and beyond, developing a reputation and winning awards for some of the best food ever served from a truck. The logical next step was a Brick & Mortar. And that’s how we landed here!

Our restaurant is conveniently located in Central Durham near the historic Hope Valley district. We are nestled in a neighborhood setting, yet close to businesses and schools just off of University Drive. If you’ve lived in Durham for a while, you may remember the original Piper’s Deli. That’s the spot! We are so lucky to have this great venue with it’s spacious, light-filled dining rooms, welcoming outdoor seating, and ample parking.

THE FOOD

Chef Juan’s culinary background reflects the bold traditions of the South, including Louisiana Cajun and Creole, Texas BBQ, Low Country Cuisine from the Carolinas, and a little kick from Mexico. Put all that together and you get Succotash Southern & Creole Kitchen!

The menu includes a mouth-watering selection of Southern & Creole favorites including Smoked Turkey & and Andouille Gumbo, Creole Red Beans & Rice, and Jambalaya. Our most popular dish so far has been the Smoked Brisket— so succulent and tasty you can cut it with a fork. We also offer a selection of 4 different PoBoys—shrimp, oyster, fried catfish, and grilled fresh catch. And you may decide to become vegetarian when you taste the Grilled Eggplant sandwich. Sides include grilled asparagus, smashed fried potatoes with 2 sauces, fresh roasted broccoli with lemon/cider vinaigrette, and of course our namesake succotash—a medley of roasted corn, tomatoes, lima and butter beans, peppers and spices. FAMILY TRADITION

Juan and Sam DiGiulio, make a great team. Juan brings the creative inspiration, and Sam brings the financial know-how and moral support. The couple founded the Succotash Food Truck in June 2018. Soon after the launch, Juan’s mom Susan got involved to run the day-to-day operations.

But the real beginning of Succotash was in South Louisiana where DiGiulio was born and raised. Growing up where the love of food and celebration is legendary, he was exposed early on to the art of great cooking. His fondest memories are of crawfish boils, family gatherings, and time spent feasting at his family’s Italian restaurant. While the family restaurant sparked his inspiration, he continued to develop his skills working in restaurants in Baton Rouge, London, and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He returned to Durham in 2007 where he has worked in some of Durham’s best-known establishments, including Nana’s, Vin Rouge, Piedmont, and Namu.

DiGiulio will tell you that making food is in his blood and that serving food is all about showing love. You are sure to appreciate his passionate approach to creating his unique Southern & Creole Cuisine
